IVA - International comparative school work

International School Comparative Test - Level A1 and A2

In order to accompany and evaluate German as a foreign language lessons in schools taking DSD | and II (German Language Diploma) exams, the Central Office for Foreign Schools (ZfA) offers international comparative tests starting in primary school.

Goal of these tests

The International School Comparative Tests (IVA) 1 and 2 pursue the following goals:

  • The results serve as a starting point for specific measures of classroom development and structuring.
  • The comparative work is a means of promoting the implementation of the DaF (German as a foreign language) competence plan and the school's internal work plan.
  • Benchmarking provides diagnostic information on the performance level of the whole class, but also on the individual level of each student.
  • In particular, the International School Comparative Work 2 prepares students for the examination format in the DSD | and II (German Language Diploma).

Execution

The comparative examination is carried out independently in the participating schools under the responsibility of the examination management. The implementation can be handled flexibly by the school: the comparative paper can be carried out as a whole on one date, or the individual parts can be carried out on different dates within a school year. In addition, the school is free to choose whether it wishes to use a comparative paper as a whole or only in parts.

The four competencies are examined in two parts:

Written exam:

  • HV (Hörverstehen) = listening comprehension.
  • LV (Leseverstehen) = reading comprehension
  • SK (Schriftliche Kommunikation) = written communication

Oral test

  • Dialogue/conversation (7-8 min.) with teachers or in the group Presentation of a topic prepared in advance by the student and questions to the topic by the teachers (IVA II only)].

For more information visit the official ZfA website.

ISV A1 Exam is taken in 4th grade, ISV A2 in 7th grade.

DSD - German language diploma

The German Language Diploma (DSD) of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany is the only school-based program for German as a foreign language abroad. The German Language Diploma of the KMK can be obtained by passing an examination at the end of several years of German language instruction at school.
The DSD program is jointly administered by the federal government and the states.

The DSD examination comprises four equally weighted examination parts

  1. Reading comprehension
  2. Listening comprehension
  3. Written communication
  4. Oral communication

The DSD can be taken at two levels

  1. Passing the German Language Diploma - First Level (DSD I) exam demonstrates proficiency in German at level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
  2. The examination for the German Language Diploma - Second Level (DSD II) tests German language skills at levels B2/C1 of the GeR. A DSD II diploma is considered proof of the German language skills required for studying at a German university.

The German Language Diploma of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany is currently taken in over 70 countries by more than 80,000 examinees each year. For more information, please visit the KMK website.
