Inclusion

At the German School Managua we can define four focal points of inclusion work, some of which look back on a long tradition:

  1. Education and upbringing in accordance with inclusive values, which is anchored in the school's mission statement and inclusion concept.
  2. A comprehensive didactic-methodological concept for the elementary school, consisting of the building blocks of free work, cooperative learning and the ritualization of lessons, which, in addition to the individual support of children in everyday school life, also presents very well the support and backing of the school authority and public relations work.
  3. A program for the individual support of children and adolescents with special needs called "PANEE", which was already developed in 2010 and whose strength lies in the cooperation between parents, external therapists and the school.
  4. A heterogeneous steering group on school coexistence. In addition to the design of projects and trainings, this group is also responsible for the evaluation of school coexistence. The results of these evaluations are always discussed in the entire college.

The inclusion concept of the German School Managua states that inclusion work at the German School Managua does not only refer to the case-related support of children and adolescents with special needs, but above all tries to do justice to the diversity of the student body and the particularities of the cultural background of the home country. In this context, the German School represents an encounter space for European values oriented towards human rights, which should enable the students to grow into critical, cosmopolitan adults who are aware of their social responsibility".
The Panee program, which was developed in 2010 and whose guidelines form the basis of the inclusion work of the German School Managua and which was primarily intended for low-threshold offers and support measures for children with special educational needs, but without special educational needs, represents an example of interdisciplinary work at our school. This program provides continuous support for children with special educational needs. Within this program, internal school training on the topic of inclusion is also offered to the entire teaching staff.

In the 2015 school year, a concept was developed by a support teacher, which is also intended to enable individual support for all students in terms of didactic methodology. In the 2016 school year, a pilot class was established in which, among others, a girl with Down syndrome is taught. The concept provides for each class to have 4 hours of
of free work per week, in which the students can work independently with the learning materials. Individual learning plans have been developed for each child, with the help of which the materials can be selected. In order to be able to realize this, the school invests every year in free work materials and in the equipment of the classrooms. The speed and willingness with which this pilot project, which is now being implemented in all first grades, was approved shows the high level of acceptance and support from the school board. Other components of the concept are the twice-weekly chair circles, which serve to reflect on the learning process and social-emotional learning, a yoga class, which has a beneficial effect on the ability to concentrate, and the regular group principle, which enables the students to support each other in stable table communities, to solve tasks together and to exchange information about personal concerns. In order to prepare the teachers for this type of work and the changed role of the teacher, in-service training was offered within the school.
Inclusive education requires resources in terms of space, material and personnel. The German School Managua has set out to become an inclusive school, thus enabling students to participate in a school education to which they would not have access under other circumstances.
